Bibi Heybat School
Shah Daniz Refurbishes School

Oil in Azerbaijan - Shah DanizSchool No. 50 in Bibi Heybat Village was recently refurbished by a team of volunteers from Shah Daniz. The school, built in 1935, is attended by 369 children from the area.

Left: Volunteers related to the Shah Daniz project gave the Bibi-Heybat school a facelift. Heating, plumbing and new equipment were also included.

Agalar Agayev, director of the school, recently commented: "You wouldn't have recognized this school a year ago. It was in a very bad condition and unsuitable for classes: the heating wasn't working, the classrooms needed refurbishment, the teachers were having difficulty getting to work (especially in wintertime) and the school didn't have money for any modernization."

Roy Timms, Rig Upgrade Manager for the Shelf 5 Drilling Rig realized that the school was falling to pieces and needed serious work on it. We were there to help the children have a school suitable for their studies."

All 25 of the school's classrooms have now been repaired and painted by the volunteers related to the Shah Daniz project, who also fixed the heating system for the winter season and improved the toilet facilities. Extra equipment was added, such as two pianos for music lessons, a ping pong table for the sports hall, a refrigerator for the lunchroom, stationery and paper supplies, plus a television and VCR.

Shah Daniz is the name given to the offshore exploration area awarded to the Shah Daniz partners and is governed by the Production Sharing Agreement (PSA) that was signed on June 4, 1996 and ratified on October 17, 1996. The Shah Daniz partnership is comprised of seven companies: SOCAR (Azerbaijan), Statoil (Norway), Elf (France), LukAgip (Russia-U.S.), OIEC (Iran), TPAO (Turkey) with BP/Amoco (U.K.-U.S.) as operator.
