Mello - Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for
Iraq who
was killed in Baghdad on August 19, 2003, when a bomb-laden cement
truck exploded beneath the window of his office in the Canal
Hotel. As he lay dying under the rubble of the blast, his last
words were said to be: "Make sure we don't leave Iraq alone".
He visited Azerbaijan in 1995 in his position as Deputy Commissioner
of UNHCR to assess the refugee crisis brought on by the conflict
between Azerbaijan and Armenia over Nagorno-Karabakh.
