The Authorship of Ali and Nino
Dr. Maharram Gasimli
Vice Director of the Institute of Literature
Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, Baku
This special issue of Azerbaijan International magazine, which is dedicated to research about the novel Ali and Nino, is with no exaggeration the result of distinguished fundamental research of encyclopedic depth. It encompasses an enormous breadth of issues and is characterized by its accuracy and comprehensiveness.
Many literary and historical documents have been investigated and studied that relate to the problem of true authorship of this beloved novel.
Two important and disputable questions were examined: “Why Lev Nussimbaum [writing under penname of Essad Bey] should not be considered the author of this novel,” and “why Azerbaijani writer Yusif Vazir Chamanzaminli should be credited as the author.” These questions, as well as dozens of others related to this issue, have been thoroughly and convincingly answered. In fact, Betty Blair, on her own, has implemented, what is the equivalent to the work of a research institution.
These days Philological Science in Azerbaijan may not fully be able to appreciate the scientific and historical importance of this research. However, I am convinced that the true value of this work will be understood in the decades to come, and this research will be recognized among the indispensable sources on “Ali and Nino.”
On behalf of Azerbaijani intellectuals and scholars, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Betty Blair for her work, which will never be forgotten.
