 Discovering
      Azerbaijan

 More than 25 years after
teaching as a foreign guest professor at Damavand College in
Tehran, I am now getting acquainted with one of Iran's next door
neighbors - Azerbaijan. It was back in 1974 when I was teaching
in a four-year college institute where we had a student body
made up of 750 very bright and capable young women including
some of Azerbaijani descent many of whom live in Iran.

During my four years living there, I learned so much about that
part of the world and developed a deep love for the people and
culture. But the borders were closed to the Soviet Union and
I knew nothing about the Azerbaijanis living in the USSR, north
of Iran's border. Now Azerbaijan International magazine has opened
up a whole new world for me, and I have come to love and admire
that country - the newly established Republic of Azerbaijan and
the things that are developing there. I wish more people could
become involved with this wonderful country. Many, many thanks
to all those who are involved in making this magazine a real
      treasure.
